Mathematical modeling of pressing sunflower seeds and oil extraction based on the logistic equation

The authors investigated the process of pressing prepared sunflower seeds and extracting oil on a laboratory unit in a cylindrical cell. To evaluate the process,such an integral characteristic as the yield of pressed oil is adopted. The use of a relatively simple linear model is promising as it can serve as a foundation for developing new models that, while maintaining physical adequacy, allows obtaining analytical dependencies and identify key control parameters of the process. An example of such a phenomenological model, according to the authors, is the logistic model developed on the basis of the classical Verhulst growth equation. This approach may well be justified and applied to obtain an analytical expression of the dependence of the amount of oil remaining in the cake on time, where each parameter (velocity constant, asymptotic residue, and critical threshold) has its own clear physical interpretation related to the properties of the oil-containing material and the modes of the oil pressing and pressing process. Kinetic curves of the sunflower pulp pressing process have been experimentally obtained for two different modes of oil pressing and pressing. By processing these data, a generalized logistic equation for the oil content M(t) in the pressed material was obtained. Based on the research results, some proposals have been developed to solve problems, including production ones.
