Determination of Vegetable Oils' Geographical Origin by Trace Element Composition: A Review of Modern Approaches

Vasilyev Vladimir A., Ocheredko Yuliya A. , Resnyanskaya Anna S.

Microelement analysis is one of the most important methods for identifying the origin of vegetable oils, requiring a systematic assessment of available scientific sources from Russian and foreign authors. In this article to describe current approaches to using data on the trace element composition of vegetable oils for determining their place of origin, to analyze data comparison algorithms, and to demonstrate the mechanisms for correlating the trace element profiles of oils and soils, as well as the use of these relationships for discriminant analysis employing machine learning tools. A synthesis of data from numerous experimental studies, predominantly by foreign authors published in reputable peer-reviewed scientific journals, was conducted. It is shown that combining modern methods for the determination of marker elements at the level of tenths and hundredths of a microgram with subsequent processing of the obtained data using chemometric analysis tools allows for the construction of multidimensional matrices. These matrices serve as input data for the further discrimination of samples according to their origin. The best results are achieved by integrating the obtained models with the elemental composition matrix of soils, groundwater, and geological formations using the capabilities of artificial intelligence. This approach enables the discrimination of vegetable oil samples by geographical origin with an effectiveness of 85–95%. Further improvement of results is possible by combining trace element analysis with isotope mass spectrometry of stable isotopes of light gaseous elements and a number of other elements.
