Optical properties of essential oils of coniferous trees investigated by Fourier IR spectroscopy and refractometry
Two optical methods, Fourier IR spectroscopy and refractometry, were used to study the essential oils of coniferous trees, such as cedars, pines, spruces, cypresses, arborvitae, junipers, and firs, as well as some of the auxiliary substances that are major components of their composition. A comparative study of the essential oils of cedars revealed an analogy in the optical properties of three isomorphic forms: pinene of the Siberian cedar and chamaechulene of the Atlas and Himalayan cedars; the optical properties of thujone, with a significant difference in the content of essential oils in the common juniper and thuja, and α-pinene in the extracts of spruce, fir, and cypress oils. The difference in the optical properties of cyclic and acyclic terpenoid alcohols and their possible influence on the spectrum of essential oils of conifers is shown. The potential possibilities of IR spectroscopy and refractometry methods as an express control of coniferous essential oils are noted in order to differentiate and evaluate them in order to improve the quality of targeted use in various fields.
